Canada remains one of the most popular study destinations for students from Punjab — but the rules have changed significantly since 2024. Here is what the process actually looks like in 2026.
What changed recently
- The SDS (Student Direct Stream) closed in November 2024 — all applicants now use the standard study-permit process.
- A Provincial/Territorial Attestation Letter (PAL/TAL) is required with most applications.
- Proof of funds increased to CAD 22,895 per year of living expenses (one applicant, outside Quebec) — tuition and transport are extra.
- Students can work up to 24 hours per week off-campus during studies.
Documents you will need
- Valid passport and recent photographs
- Letter of acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) + PAL/TAL
- Proof of funds (bank statements, education loan, GIC where applicable)
- Academic transcripts and English test scores (IELTS/PTE)
- Statement of purpose explaining your study plan and ties to home
The process, step by step

Timelines vary by season — apply well before your intake (January, May or September).
Frequently asked questions
Is IELTS mandatory for Canada?
Most DLIs and visa officers expect proof of English. IELTS is the most widely used, but PTE Academic has also been accepted for Canadian study permits since 2023. Required scores vary by programme.
Can my visa be guaranteed?
